A woman has been charged, accused of intentionally starving her ex-boyfriend’s dog, who was found “close to death”.
Rescuers said they found the emaciated rottweiler-mastiff cross appearing lethargic and tied in a yard in South Carolina.
“He is weak with very pale gums, and he was covered in maggots, even in his mouth!” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC wrote on Facebook.
“This is animal abuse!”
They believe the dog, whom they nicknamed Champ, had been starved for more than a month.
He was rescued Thursday after a passer-by spotted it tied up and alerted authorities.
A vet told the group the 16-month-old dog, which should weigh about 50 kilograms, is below half that at 23 kilograms.
The pup is now being given food, care, and medical assistance, but he remains in a critical condition.
It is understood an ex-boyfriend left the dog with Elizabeth Lena James, 30, six months ago, Fox News reported.
“She intentionally did not feed this dog,” Captain Chris Martin was reported in The Charlotte Observer as saying.
“This dog was on her property. She sees the dog everyday and see his conditions are worse.
“She could have stepped up, contacted law enforcement, animal control, she could have put this dog on Facebook and tried to find a home for the dog. She just chose not to.”
James has been charged with ill treatment of animals and will face court next month.
